Parts of a Skid and How to Use It

A skid is a type of a pallet used to move luggage.  Normally, you will find them being used in warehouses and other busy areas that handle large amounts of luggage for instance the ports and large construction sites. A skid is used with a fork lift, a type of a vehicle used to lift luggage.  A fork lift is also known as a skid mower.  Forklifts come in different sizes and designs depending on the kind of work it was mean to do.

A skid consists of three boards that serve as the main parts of the structure. Several other boards are placed across these three boards facing the opposite direction.  This creates a firm flat surface on which on which one places the goods to be placed. Some other boards are used as the spacers to space the ground surface and the top so as to provide some space through which the forklift can enter.

Just like most other products these days. Skids too are being manufactured in many and varied styles and designs so as to cater for the different needs of the market. Currently wooden skids are the most common.  There are also steel skids as well as plastic ones.  To make maximum use of space most skids manufactured these days come in standard sizes. Most are made of a size that can easily accommodate most box sizes and one that can easily fit well into trucks and box luggage cars.

There are several factors to consider when using a skid on a forklift. Top among them is safety. It is advisable to carry the load as low as possible while moving so as to avoid straining the forklift and the skid. When going uphill ensure that the side bearing the load is on the uphill end.  Always put the skids to their proper use to minimize chances of damage.
